I’ve always been motivated by magic and everyday wonder, and this script really allowed us to bring children’s imaginations to life. We mixed stop motion with a sense of lightness and charm to create something slightly magical that captures the idea of what it’s like to be in the moment and see the world come alive with possibility.

Created for MND Australia and Directed by Husein Alicajic, ‘The Fading Symphony’ is a powerful and inspiring campaign to raise awareness of the debilitating symptoms of motor neurone disease (MND). Featuring Australian musician, actor and comedian Tim Minchin with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra this innovative re-recording and video of Neil Finn’s track ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’, highlights the physical impacts of the disease metaphorically through the artists’ deteriorating performances. MND is a progressive terminal neurological disease with no known cure or effective treatment. Each day in Australia two people die from and another two diagnosed with MND, causing them to suffer progressive loss in use of their limbs, ability to speak, swallow and breathe while their mind and senses usually remain intact. As if affected by MND, Minchin and the orchestra fall abruptly silent. Viewers are asked to donate, then rewarded by the symphonies resurgence to complete the iconic song.

We shot this in the Deutsche Bank building in Sydney’s CBD one Sunday, with a few days rehearsal prior where we worked out the choreography and staging of the various story beats inside the space. My favorite moment is about halfway through where the lighting transitions and we begin to descend, followed by a grand low angle wide shot looking up in the glorious atrium. Part of the fun was using this contemporary urban environment and making it feel slightly magical, juxtaposing the movement and emotion of the incredible dancers against all the sharp reflective surfaces, finding the beauty in this contemporary urban office setting. I also love how the dancers descend, almost like angels and end up joining the everyday world at the end, inviting us to be transformed as they have been, by movement and the world around them.

A joy to direct the live action on this film and be part of the team that launched the first smart glasses from Ray-Ban x Facebook, Ray-Ban Stories. These glasses introduce a new way for us to connect and share with others while staying in the moment.

An exploded doll’s house reveal at the climax is the fun of this piece, but key was the slow reveal that gradually lets us see the joins of the house and travel through the walls seamlessly without showing our hand too early. Immersive camera techniques and magical transitions lend themselves to the colorful tone perfectly in the end.
